Received Question about CUMMINS 8.3 Litre Diesel Engine Head Bolt Torque
This goes out to Judith who sent me a very good question about torquing head bolts on a CUMMINS 8.3 Diesel Engine.
Question:
Mr. Whelan. when torquing the head bolts on the 8.3 Cummins, do you retorque all the short bolts to 52 ft. lbs after you torque the long bolts to 105 ft. lbs, or just go straight to the 90 deg. turn? ... thank you for all the great info! judith
Answer:
Every torque sequence must be repeated to allow the crush on the head gasket. Yes, it is a good idea to check the 52 ft. lb. torque on the short[outer] head bolts after the long head bolts are torqued to 105 ft. lbs. I keep checking the torque on both until there is no movement. Then you're ready for the final 90 degree turn on each head bolt.
Thanks for your question!
