Cummins Diesel Engines - B Series Valve Adjustment

Cummins Diesel Engines

how to adjust the engine valves: Cummins 3.9 and 5.9 litre engines.

  1. Find top dead center for #1 cylinder / Check valves with engine cold.
  2. This is accomplished by cranking over engine by hand and pushing in timing pin located behind timing cover on the drivers side of engine under the injection pump. The pin has to engage into the camshaft gear.
  3. Both #1 cylinder valves should be loose - use .010 in. feeler guage for intake / 0.20 in. feeler guage for exhaust. Once adjustments are made torque lock nuts on rocker arms to 18 ft. lbs.
  4. On a 4 Cylinder Cummins Diesel Engine : Check/adjust Intake valves on # 1 and # 2 engine cylinders / Exhaust valves on # 1 and # 3 cylinders
  5. On a 6 cylinder Cummins Diesel Engine: Check/Adjust Intake valves on #1 #2 and #4 engine cylinders / Exhaust valves on #1 #3 and #5 engine cylinders.
  6. Remove timing pin and rotate your diesel engine 360 degrees / mark vibration dampner and rotate engine one full turn.
  7. On a 4 cylinder Cummins Diesel Engine: Check/Adjust Intake valves on #3 and #4 engine cylinders / Exhaust valves on #2 and #4 engine cylinders.
  8. On a 6 cylinder Cummins Diesel Engine: Check/Adjust Intake valves on #3 #5 and #6 engine cylinders / Exhaust valves on #2 #4 and #6 engine cylinders.
  9. Remember to tighten adjustment locknuts to 18 ft. lbs.

That's all there is to it when checking valve adjustment on a B Series Cummins Diesel Engine.
