Cat 3116 Diesel Engine-Rear Seal Installation

The Cat 3116 rear seal comes with a plastic sleeve that should be left in the seal until installation, it helps the seal lip keep it's shape. The seal also comes with a wear sleeve that is pushed on at the same time with the seal installer.

The seal is installed dry, this is accomplished with Cat Tool # IU-7594

The seal installation tool is a 3 piece unit that bolts {2 allen head fasteners} to the crankshaft flywheel bolt holes.

The driver nut threads onto the stud that is bolted to the crank and pushes the seal and wear sleeve on at the same time. The driver bottoms out when seal is positioned properly in the flywheel housing.

Remove Seal installer and you see the seal and sleeve perfectly positioned. The seal installer is the only way to go in order to do this job right.
The front crank seal was previously installed in the timing cover using a proper driver. The vibration dampner then slides over crankshaft quite easily then the four fasteners are torqued to 120 ft. lbs.

Coming up: I'll be installing the cylinder head on our Cat 3116 Diesel Engine....

Hi John, great site! I have a couple of questions regarding a cat 3116E in a 1998 GMC Topkick C6500. The water pump is leaking out the weep whole, so I would like to replace it with a reman unit or rebuild it myself, are these rebuild able? I can't find any aftermarket reman pumps or rebuild kits! I also am having a hard time removing the water pump drive belt, looks like I need to take the harmonic balancer of the pulley? Do I need a puller to take it of ounce all the bolts are out? and what is the final torque for the bolts? thanks in advance for any help! -Jamie

There is a reman available at the Cat Dealer. As far as I know there is no rebuild kit available. The belt could be too short, I've experienced that before (try a slightly longer belt). The belt will pry off while hand cranking over the engine.
The torque is 20 ft lbs
